Substance in Unreal Engine 4: Materials Made easy

Unreal Engine 4 and Substance team up to offer a smoother workflow. Our latest update includes some really awesome features and access to many photorealistic materials: get ready to get creative!

Substance Source: A Treasure Trove Of Materials

Substance Source is a vast library containing high-quality PBR-ready Substance materials, and is accessible directly in Unreal Engine via the Substance plugin. These customizable Substance files can easily be adapted to a wide range of projects and in Unreal Engine 4, you get 25 Substance Source materials curated by Allegorithmic and Epic Games for free.

Substance Source includes scanned materials with customizable parameters, such as the recent sportswear fabrics, as well as procedural materials with full parameter control, thus allowing you to fine-tune as much as you like to get the exact look and feel you need.

You will also have access to Substance materials developed for Substance Source by industry professionals like Daniel Thiger (Lead Environment Artist at Bungie), who produced a selection of 15 fully procedural ground materials, so detailed that they are virtually indistinguishable from scanned materials.

If you are using Unreal Studio, you will get 100 curated Substance Source materials for free! And to make sure your imagination and your creation are on the same page, each of these materials is tweakable directly in Unreal Engine.

LiveLink With Substance Painter

The Substance plugin ships with the capability to establish a LiveLink with Substance Painter and Unreal Engine 4. Simply right-click on an asset in Unreal Engine to send it to Substance Painter. As you work in Substance Painter, your textures are automatically updated in Unreal Engine.

And we don't want to say too much, but you can expect great things to come for Substance Painter... Stay tuned!

We are always striving to improve Substance in Unreal Engine and our latest update for UE4.19 includes the following:

  • Substance CPU engine now supports 4K

  • Translucent UE4 material setup is now automated for translucent Substance materials

  • The renaming of Substance assets and the pathing within the content browser is no longer reset upon reimport

  • sRGB material texture settings are no longer reset to default upon reimport

  • Default import size is now an option in the Substance settings and defaults to 1024x1024
